Marcin (Martin) Wiesiolek

Marcin Wiesiolek has led the CMU Cross Country Ski Team since September 2021. His approach brings together competitive ambition, strong technical coaching, and a team culture where athletes feel valued and support one another. He was named the 2026 USCSA Coach of the Year and serves as head coach for Team USA’s cross country ski team at the World University Games.

Under Martin’s leadership, CMU athletes have earned team and individual national championships and opportunities to represent the United States internationally. In 2026, the team won three individual titles at the USCSA National Championships, including both the women’s and men’s 15 km freestyle races. Greta Bochenek and Wesley Sumner also earned places on Team USA for the 2027 World University Games in Changchun, China.

For Martin, those achievements begin with the everyday experience of being on the team: training consistently, sharing meals, building friendships, and showing up for each other. He emphasizes sound skills, sustainable fitness, and confidence, helping athletes pursue demanding goals while maintaining a healthy relationship with their sport. He wants students to leave CMU with lasting friendships and a love of skiing that continues beyond college.

That philosophy extends into the community. Through free community clinics and work with the Grand Junction Veterans Administration’s recreational therapy program, Martin and the team help others discover cross country skiing and develop their skills. Giving back is part of the athletes’ experience alongside training and racing.

Originally from Poland, Martin left Communist Poland at age 19 and moved to the United States. He lived in Philadelphia and served in the U.S. Army, including combat tours, before settling in Grand Junction in 2000. He goes by Martin in everyday life.
