Student Health, Safety and Injuries

Each individual participating in the club's activities assumes responsibility for their own health. It is mandatory that all individuals who intend to participate in the club sports program, for their own protection, undergo a physical examination prior to participation (refer to "II. Required Registrations"). In case of injury, individuals must seek medical assistance and report the injury to the coach. If the coach is not immediately available, the report should be made to the Club Sports Director or the Athletic Trainer. There will be no fees billed to athletes' student accounts or their insurance for seeing the Club Sports Athletic Trainer in the Club Sports Training Room, as these services are provided by Club Sports.

The coach or the next in line must complete an Accident Report Form with the Manager of Club Sports/ Athletic Trainer within 24 hours of an incident (injury, fight, misconduct, etc.) occurring on- or off-campus.

The athletic trainer may refer athletes to Student Health Center or other medical providers for appointments with physicians, therapists, lab tests and other services. All athletes must have separate insurance and are responsible for all billing related to such services

Injury Reporting

Every injury must be reported. Participants are responsible for reporting injuries and scheduling an appointment with the Club Sports Athletic Trainer. Participants may also confer with Student Health Center. If the participant wishes to see their Primary Care Physician or receive care outside of Colorado Mesa University, they must submit copies of medical documents as proof of care and clearance.

For injuries that may occur at away contest, students must report the incident within 48 hours of the occurrence of an injury. The Club Sports Athletic Trainer or Director of Club Sports should be contacted as early as possible by phone in the event of a serious injury or illness.

Medical Disqualification

Following a reportable injury, club students do not have the right to make their own decision to resume training or racking without the consent of the certified athletic trainers or physician that is coordinating their care.  In the event that a student ignores or chooses to disregard medical orders given by a certified athletic trainer or physician, the student:

  • Will be held from any competition, play, physical activity, or practice for an undetermined amount of time until the participant’s injury has resolved. This will be determined by the physician and/or certified athletic trainer.
  • At minimum, could be suspended from participating in all club sports events for 1 week (includes practices, camps and races).
  • Any other disciplinary action will be at the discretion of Athletic Training Services, physician and the Club Sports Director.

Insurance

Participants are responsible for assuming all financial obligations incurred for treatment of any injury or illness that may be sustained as a result of participation in CMU Cross Country Skiing. Insurance is not needed to see the Club Sports Athletic Trainer. However, if your injury warrants referral of care it will be necessary to provide proof of insurance. The student will be held responsible for all medical bills acquired with the referral of care.

Rules of Conduct and Reporting Violations

The CMU Cross Country Skiing club is committed to upholding the rules and conduct outlined and defined by the U.S. Center for SafeSport. The head coach prioritizes the safety and well-being of the athletes above all else and ensures that all members are educated about the SafeSport Code, policies, and guidelines. The coaching staff and students are expected to actively promote an environment that fosters respect, integrity, and accountability. The head coach regularly reviews and updates our practices to align with the latest standards set forth by SafeSport, and will designate in 2024-25season individuals within the club who are trained to address any concerns related to misconduct or abuse. Through continuous education, communication, and vigilance, the club strives to maintain a culture of safety and support within our club.

In addition, all coaches and club assistants within the CMU Cross Country Skiing club are required to undergo training and possess a current certification from the U.S. Center for SafeSport. This ensures that our leadership team is equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to create a safe and inclusive environment for all participants. By adhering to these stringent requirements, we aim to uphold the highest standards of safety and integrity within our club, providing athletes with the assurance that their well-being is our top priority at all times.

Report to Colorado Mesa University

If you have experienced sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, domestic violence, dating violence, and/or stalking call or text the SART hotline 970-270-5895 or use Report It form.

It is Colorado Mesa University's policy to provide for the safety and security of all members of its campus community. CMU's Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) supports complainants of sexual violence (defined as any act of sexual contact without consent or without legal consent) by assessing and addressing their needs.

  • SART responders' first priority is to ensure that students are safe and provide support services, including access to medical aid, connecting complainants with a campus advocate, and supplying alternative housing options and academic assistance.
  • The filing of a report does not constitute that a crime was committed. Campus Safety uses the data provided in reports as "information only," and may — at its discretion — share said information with the university counseling office or local law enforcement.
  • Information transmitted via Report It does not go on your student record.
