Wesley “Wes” Sumner grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, skiing across frozen lakes and through the state’s forests. An enthusiasm for the outdoors kept him running, mountain biking, and competing in triathlons throughout the year, with cross country skiing bringing him back to the snow each winter. In high school, he helped his cross country running team finish second at the state championships and earned all-state honors in skiing. Before coming to Colorado Mesa University, Wes competed in cross country running, track and field, and skiing at St. Olaf College.

At the 2026 USCSA National Championships in Lake Placid, New York, Wes captured the national title in the 15 km freestyle mass start, breaking away from the field and skiing alone to the finish. He also placed fifth in the 7.5 km classic race, earning All-American honors and demonstrating his strength in both techniques.

Wes is studying biology at CMU, where his interest in nature connects with a growing passion for river conservation and protecting snow and water resources in the West. Beyond racing with the CMU Cross Country Ski Team, he enjoys exploring the mountains through trail running, alpine skiing, and hiking.
